Berkshire County’s Colonial Theatre Rocks with Dave Brubeck and Richie Havens & the Beat Goes On

The Colonial Theatre, Pittsfield, Massachusetts

Nothing is typical in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. . Everything is World Class and extraordinary. At this time of year, you’d think that nothing could compete with the natural beauty of the hills and mountains covered in a blaze of red, gold and orange mirrored from the mountainsides into sapphire lakes. Local residence and visitors from as far away as Italy, France and Japan come to Berkshire County to drink in its incredible beauty. But, while other northeastern regions have mountains, lakes and experience the natural beauty of the seasons, Berkshire County is unique in that, for centuries through today, it has attracted incredibly talented writers, artists, composers, musicians and performers who have lived, worked, visited and immersed themselves in this unique and inspiring locale And, in the aftermath of Labor Day, when most places shutter their cultural and entertainment calendars for the season, in Berkshire County the beat goes on with World Class talent performing in Pittsfield, MA in its historic gilded-age Colonial Theatre as is evidenced by the appearances of musical greats in the past week: Richie Havens and the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

The combination of being at The Colonial Theatre in the presence of musical greatness in a palatial setting rivaling the grandeur of a European opera house that you might find in Milan or Vienna or Belfast’s Grand Opera House,

Belfast’s Grand Opera House, Northern Ireland

nestled in the splendor of the natural beauty of Berkshire County, heightens the senses as the beat goes on and on. And, unlike the opera houses of Europe, The Colonial Theatre is a “come as you are” party of visitors and locals whose relaxed attire is a reflection of the laid-back lifestyle that is Berkshire County. But don’t let that fool you into thinking that, as one Williamstown resident, Cole Porter, once proposed, “Anything Goes,” because, when it comes to cultural offerings, only the best is offered all year ‘round and the programming at The Colonial Theatre, as seen in just the last week, has lived up to that platinum standard.

The Richie Havens Concert and the performance of the Dave Brubeck Quartet were testimonials to the power of music in enriching lives. To hear these great musicians in a live concert is uplifting and to hear them in historic elegance at The Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield where such greats as Rachmaninoff, Paderewski, and Sarah Bernhardt performed, enriches the experience.

The ‘opening act’ for the Dave Bareback Quartet was the Pittsfield City-Jazz Youth Ensemble with performers from local Berkshire County high schools and Simon’s Rock College, a school known for fostering the talents of its students and whose alumnae include film makers Joel and Ethan Coen, whose films include Fargo, O Brother Where Art Thou, and The Big Lebowski. Brubeck played a piano duet with the young pianist and young musicians of the jazz ensemble creating an indelible image of the master passing the baton to the emerging next generation of talent, performing on this historic stage and playing a restored 1800’s Steinway piano. This was a moment steeped in magic.

If you’re in the northeast on business or you’re looking for a memorable place for a breakaway, it’s time for you give yourself some time to collect some joyful moments for your memory bank. Berkshire County lies in the northwest corner of Massachusetts and borders Upstate NY and the west and Vermont on the north. The trip getting to Berkshire County is nothing short of gorgeous no matter what route you take and you have choices. A two hour drive on the Mass Pike due west will bring you from Boston to this region or a two and a half hour drive from the George Washington Bridge in NYC along the Taconic Parkway will achieve the same goal. If you’re coming for skiing and winter sports, take the New York State Thruway which is better maintained during snowy months and during storms than the Taconic Parkway, and the Thruway has rest stops along the highway without having to exit into small towns along the route and the added services of the NYS Troopers who patrol the road to provide you with assistance should you need it.

Berkshire County is a twelve-month paradise where you’ll find MassMoCA, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, the Francis and Sterling Art Institute where, in the midst of this sequestered county you’ll discover thirty-five Renoir pain tings, other great impressionists and priceless art objects in the permanent collection and the Norman Rockwell Museum all waiting for you year ‘round. There’s an inn with a cozy fire in the living room or your bedroom suite waiting for you and there are all the services of a luxury hotel including superior dining, an indoor swimming pool and covered parking at your service at the Berkshire Crowne Plaza Hotel which is located in the heart of local ski options. And if it’s a spa retreat you’re looking for, Berkshire County has World Class spas waiting for your arrival that will exceed your expectations.

Imagine! All this and you don’t have to cross an ocean to find it!

There’s a reason I choose to live in Berkshire County. Let me know if you’re coming to visit us! We broadcast my nationally syndicated radio shows from the shopping arcarde of the Berkshire Crowne Plaza Hotel across from their Underground Pub. I really do hope you’ll visit us! You won’t be disappointed.
