Remember the Film Grumpy Old Men and the Ice Fishing Scene? Have a Look at This!

Ice Fishing Tournament in Western Massachusetts

I thought about Wabash Minnesota today when I saw a group  of ice fishermen on a lake in Berkshire County in Western Massachusetts. What’s the connection? The ice fishing scenes in the film, “Grumpy Old Men,” were filmed in Wabash which is located along US-6 located outside of Wabash along  the Great River Road that runs along the Mississippi River  through the state. Known as the Land of Lakes (like the butter brand), winter and ice fishing go hand-in-hand in Minnesota but they clearly don’t have the market cornered on ice fishing! Given the extremely cold (and snowy) winter of 2018-2019, the ice on this Massachusetts lake must be as thick as it was a couple of years ago when it reached 36″! During any average winter, lakes in the Western Massachusetts region freeze to 18″ think and you’ll find fisherman complete with their trucks, tents and ice fishing equipment and lots of libations and campfires they create  to keep them warm while they fish . I hope they all take all of their empty beer cans and any debris they create home with them! In the late spring, locals find out how many fisherman and other winter sport users of lakes didn’t tidy up after themselves as they find the occasion empty can float ashore. Once a Girls Scout, always a Girl Scout so I share with you something ingrained into my very being from my years in childhood and adulthood in Girl Scouting:

“Always leave a place better than the way you found it!”

Well, at least as nice as it was when you arrived if you can’t really improve on it!
