Would You Accept $150 for Being Bumped Off an Overbooked Flight? Don’t!

I was finalizing my check-in on a Continental Airlines flight at a kiosk at the airport recently and one of the screens that popped up referred to the possibility that my flight might be oversold. The question on the screen asked me if I would be willing to accept $150 and take a later flight and made it easy to respond with a simple touch on the yes or no answer box.

Please be aware that this is a very bad deal! If the airline you are flying with informs you that the flight you are about to take is overbooked and offers you a pittance to relinquish your seat and take a later flight, please note that, according to my good friend, Alexander Anolik, who is the premier authority on law as it relates to the travel industry, new travelers’ rights regulations require the airlines to offer you $1300 which must be paid in cash on the spot or they must issue a check to you within 24 hours if you are bumped off a flight. Al Anolik also recommends, as he explained to my radio audiences on Travel WITH Stephanie Abrams and Travelers411, that you not accept the $1300 in the form of an airline voucher in that amount because these vouchers often have many restrictions on their usage including an expiration date that may not work in your future travel plans. His recommendation is that you take the cash and run or, if you prefer to take a voucher, negotiate the value of the voucher to a much higher figure to compensate yourself for the inconveniences you may incur because of the variety of restrictions that are associated with the voucher’s use.

In any event, don’t be quick to accept a ridiculous offer of $150 or any other low number that is an insult to you as the traveler to be bumped off a flight when there are passenger rights regulations that put the value of your compensation at $1300!
